I’ve been doing a lot of harvesting (my term for: browsing the web to absorb good advice and inspiration) lately and stumbled once again upon a book I had seen some time ago. The concept of reThinking how we work or reInvesting in what we as business owners feel is most important was intriguing. So, long story short, the book was ordered and I read it easily over the weekend.
The actual title in all CAPS is REWORK (I altered it slightly in my post title for the sake of tone) written by the founders of 37signals. If you’re not familiar with what or who 37signals is, well you’ve probably not done business with Pixsym before.
That’s ok, I just need to explain.
37signals is a software company that specializes in creating simple software that businesses can use to improve the processes most important to them. When I say simple, I don’t mean cheap software that doesn’t get you anywhere. Rather, it’s software with a specific and clear purpose that does not add the bulk or unnecessary weight of
hardly ever never used bells and whistles. That software development focus is what attracted Pixsym to both Basecamp & Highrise, two of 37signals most popular offerings. We use each in our every day operations… Basecamp for project management & Highrise for keeping our contacts and prospect follow-up organized. Do they have all the features you might find in other similar products, probably not – and we’re just fine with that.
The book, REWORK explains what we’ve been doing as a company for the last few years & also how unnecessary bells and whistles slow productivity. The book challenges the robotic methodologies associated with all areas of running a business. Things like: Should you be in a hurry to grow?, Who should you hire and when?, The value of investment capital, Why we should all avoid meetings like the plague, Maximizing productivity without over-working, and the obsession business owners have with their competition. Believe me, if you like the sound of that, there is plenty more!
Get the book.
Yes, I could have given you a ‘BUY NOW’ affiliate link and gotten paid for each sale I refer, but that’s not what I’m going to do. That’s lame. Pixsym & this book would appear less credible if I did that. If you’re reading a book right now, finish it so you can read this one next. I don’t care if you have a list, read ‘REWORK’ next.
Who should read it?
Everyone probably. Seriously, there is tons of stuff in this book that could save you tons of time and money regardless of who you are or what you do for a living.
That said, I think the book is really written to address the challenges that come with starting a business. The book calls them ‘starters’ you may call them entrepreneurs, either way – if you identify with this type of business go-getter, then this book is calling you out.
